September 27th College – Community Town Meeting Official launch of Allegheny’s Core Commitments Initiatives 4:30 – 6:00 Tippie Alumni Center, Tillotson Room

September 28th Dr. Patricia L. Dawson, M.D ’71. CC, 301/302 – lunch discussion. “Forged by the Knife: The Experience of Surgical Residency from the Perspective of a Woman of Color”

September 30th, from 7:30 - 9 p.m., in 101 Quigley, John de Graaf will be screening his movie Buyer Be Fair, an award-winning treatment of the Fair Trade movement in the United States and Europe. Terry Bensel (who does a cameo in the movie!) from the Dept. of Environmental Science, and Ron Simko (of Sodexho) and recent Allegheny grad Meagan Zeune will join de Graaf after the film for conversation and debate. Bensel has been active in the sustainable forestry field, and Simko and Zeune will report on Allegheny's plans to shift to all Fair Trade coffee on campus, and on other efforts to bring a greater ethical sensibility to our campus consumption.

October 1st, from 7:30 - 9 p.m., in 101 Quigley, John will be screening The Motherhood Manifesto, a film that documents the struggle by working mothers in the United States for workplace reforms, health and child care benefits, etc. Manifesto was instrumental in spurring the "Mom's Rising" movement (see www.momsrising.org) that's making real change across the country. De Graaf will be joined by members of the Women's Studies Program for discussion and debate after the film.

October 8th Dialogue I. (lunch) “The Role of Higher Education in Community Planning and Economic Development”. Stephen J. Goldsmith (CEED Advisory Board Member and nationally known city planner) will provide opening remarks and help frame our discussion.
